What becomes of your dreams? Genesis 37 -39

Joseph had a dream that his brothers and father bowed down to him. His brothers resented him for this and tagged him; 'a dreamer'.Genesis 37:9

And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

Genesis 37:11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

At that time, Joseph didn't know how his dreams would come to pass. He didn't need to. In Isaiah 55:9 - 11, God tells us that his ways are not our ways neither are his thoughts like ours.

Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

Everything God has ever proclaimed over your life He is faithful to do. He will surely bring to pass all he has promised just like he did Joseph.

Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery out of spite not knowing that they were instruments pushing him to his place of breakthrough.

Genesis 37:20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

There are things to learn from the story of Joseph; from his time as a slave in Egypt to how he rose to become a high governor in a foreign land; which can be found in Genesis 39-45.

Joseph loved the Lord and he trusted in his God at all times. He was sold by his own brothers, falsely accused of attempted rape by Potiphar's wife and wrongfully thrown in prison. Here are 4 things to learn from Joseph:

  1. Joseph was hopeful. Even in prison, he knew he was innocent and he believed that God would see him through. In Genesis chapter 49:14 he interpreted the dreams of two prisoner (the wine steward and the chief baker). Joseph told the wine steward to please remember him when he leaves the prison. He had not given up and was hopeful.

  2. Joseph was humble and always attributed his abilities to God.

Genesis 40:8 And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.

He gave glory to God for his ability to interpret dreams and his wisdom.

3. Joseph was responsible and kind. He saw two prisoners who were sad and offered to help them, despite his own problems.

Genesis 40:7 And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?

4. Joseph chose to obey God by refusing to sin with Potiphar's wife which landed him in prison.

Genesis 39:9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

In return, God blessed him, favoured him and promoted him. His dreams came to pass just as God had revealed to him through dreams. I want you to know today that your dreams are valid. To the person wondering what would become of his or her dreams, to the person anxious about his or her future, hold on and trust in God. God sees you and He loves you and He has not forgotten you. He is our helper, our deliverer and our provider.

Come to Him today, trust in him and He will bring your dreams to pass no matter the circumstances.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we come to you today, asking for strength to hold on to your promises. We trust in you and that you will fulfill every promise you have made concerning our lives in Jesus Name. Amen.
