The apostle Paul made us understand that we are all children of God by faith in Christ Jesus irrespective of where we come from. He explained that God sent forth his Son, Jesus, born of a woman, to redeem those that were under the law (of Moses), so that he could adopt us as his very own children. (Galatians 4:1-5).
“But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law. To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.” Galatians 4:4-5
We are sons of God, and heirs of God through Christ Jesus (Galatians 4:7). An heir is one who inherits or is entitled to inherit the rank, title, position, etc., of another. When we accept Christ into our lives, we become joint-heirs with Christ; we become heirs to the kingdom of God. We not only become joint-heirs with Christ, we are also set free and no longer entangled with the yoke of bondage (Galatians 5:1).
Now that we know we are all children of God, what are we supposed to do?
We have been called to show love to one another;
“For, brethren, ye heave been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself.” Galatians 5:13-14
We should allow the Holy Spirit to lead us in all aspects of our life. By walking in the Spirit, we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. The flesh and the spirit are constantly at war with each other, and that is why the urge to sin often besets us.
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.” Galatians 5:17
Paul went further to list the works of the flesh which are; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness (morally impure), lasciviousness (inclined to lustfulness; lewd), Idolatry (also excessive or blind adoration), witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, sedition, heresies, envying, murder, drunkenness, revelling (Galatians 5:19-21). Those who do any of these things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God.
Paul then listed the fruits of the Spirit, they are;
Love
Joy
Peace
Long-suffering (patience)
Gentleness
Goodness
Faith
Meekness
Temperance (self- control)
When the Holy Spirit controls you, he will produce these kinds of fruits in you. Those who are in Christ have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there (Galatians 5:24).We are truly indeed free from the bondage of sin, we are free from our sinful nature by walking in the spirit.
Here are some things I noted from today’s passage;
I am a child of promise, a seed of Abraham, a Son of God, and an heir to God’s kingdom through Christ Jesus. Galatians 4:6-7, 28.
I am free from the yoke and bondage of sin. Through Christ, my lustful desires and sinful nature have been nailed to the cross and crucified. Galatians 5:24
As a child of God, I must show love to those I come in contact with, live according to my new life in the Holy Spirit, and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in every aspect of my life in order to produce the fruits of the Holy Spirit. I must also never be weary in doing good to all especially to my Christian brothers and sisters. Galatians 5;13-14, 6:9-10
Prayer: Heavenly father, please empower me to walk in the Holy Spirit in all aspects of my life, help me to produce fruits of the Holy Spirit in Jesus Name. Amen
