Review

Longrin Wetten took us into the captivating and exciting experience of life in the Nigerian university. From the Prologue where we first got a glimpse of the dangers of the occult world that has become prevalent in Campus society, to the everyday complexities of dealing with lecturers, to romantic connections, sparks and heartbreaks, and ultimately the quest for true love in the face of impending danger, suspicion and opposition.

Wetten individualized each character in the story, from the main characters to the minor characters. The characters were colourful, playful, adventurous, philosophical and some even dangerous, all succeeding in keeping you hooked to see the outcome of the protagonist in the story. The father-daughter relationship between Marylyn and her father was beautifully captured and played an important role in forming Marylyn’s personality (her almost perfect nature). Dan, on the other hand a playful and fun loving student with a different kind of relationship with his family which may have also contributed to his personality and lack of emotional attachment till he met Marylyn.

The language of the book is clear and simple, making it easy to understand the characters as one uncovers the plot of the story. I particularly liked the use of Pidgin English among the friends of the main characters- Dan and Marylyn, even though they were not fluent with the language.

The issue of cultism, its impact on the Nigerian students, and the dangers associated with it was vividly portrayed in the story. I also liked the presentation of other positive campus associations like The Flyer’s Club that Marylyn belonged to.

Lie to me, Dan by Longrin Wetten was an interesting read, do I recommend this book? Yes I would, it is an exciting romance thriller with a few twists and turns that would keep you turning pages.
