Always Victorious

2 Samuel 1- 4

David was made king of Israel at the age of thirty. He had ruled Judah for 7 years before that, he ruled over Israel and Judah for 33 years.

2 Samuel 5:4 - 5

David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

This was years after he had killed Goliath and fought numerous battles for Saul. It took David years of persecution from Saul who fervently sought to kill him before he witnessed the promise of God.

One thing is certain and it is that God will never fail. He is always victorious.

In 2 Samuel 5, when the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king, they came to fight against him.

2 Samuel 5:17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.

David prayed to God for direction. God told him to go and that he would defeat the Philistines. David obeyed and emerged victorious.

2 Samuel 5:19 And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

David did what God told him and he defeated the Philistines.

2 Samuel 5:20

And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim.

After that, the enemy did not relent. The Philistines gathered together against David again. Now David did not trust in his own strength and ability. He went to God and asked God for guidance. David asked if he should go after the Philistines.

2 Samuel 5:23

And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

2 Samuel 5:23 And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

The second time God gave him a different instruction. God told him not to attack the Phislistines from where he was, but to go around and get ready to attack them from the other side, near the balsam trees. God told him to wait till he would hear the sound of marching in the treetops, then he should attack because the Lord would be marching ahead of him to defeat the Philistine army.

David did what God had commanded, and was able to drive the Philistines back from Geba all the way to Gezer.

Obeying God's instruction guarantees victory in all areas of one's life. David allowed God to direct his steps, he sought God's word before embarking on the battle with the Philistines.

Like David, it is important to let God guide your steps and actions in everything you do regardless of your previous success. In 2 Samuel 5, David did not let his earlier victory blind him from seeking God's direction in his next battle with the Philistines.

Applying this principle in your daily life and engaging with the Holy Spirit throughout the day is one way that will not only guide you in life and prevent you from making mistakes, but also deepen your relationship with God.

You need to spend time with God's word. Knowing what God says and doing it is a sure way to guarantee victory in life.

Psalms 119:105

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

The word of God acts like a lamp that illuminates and guides one through darkness. You need the light of God in His word to direct you just like David our bible character did.

We must not put our trust in man or in our own wisdom and strength because the only way that guarantees victory is listening and obeying God's commands.

Proverbs 3:5 -6

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

Trusting in God ensures your victory in life; from your day to day activities, your relationship with others, your dreams and aspirations. You cannot trust God if you do not build your faith in him. You build your faith through constant fellowship with God and studying your bible.

Trusting and following God's instructions helps you overcome battles in life. It could a health challenge, financial, emotional or mental. God has never failed, victory is always guaranteed with God. Trust in him today.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please help me to build my faith through your word. Strengthen me, guide me and direct me in all areas of my life. I ask for grace to always listen and do what you tell me to do in a Jesus name, Amen.
