Poem : Newlywed Blues

Tina had the smile of a woman in love

Smiling and giggling as she rushed home from work

Waving with glee at her grouchy neighbour next door

Into the Kitchen to fix her love his dinner

It was his favourite soup mixed just right

The aroma; a sweet savour that gave her such delight

Glancing at his text, she could hardly wait

To see him walk through their door in his steady gait

Do all newlyweds feel this way?

She wonders as sets the dish in a sumptuous array

Hours passed and she starts to fret

Its five hours past his closing time, why is he late?

She’s left several missed calls on his phone

Still no answer, now she really feels dismay

Finally she hears the sound of his engine driving in

She adjusts the bow on her scarlet robe

Her heart soars as soon as he walks in

He smells of sandalwood and a tingle of lavender

Apologizing for the bad traffic and his terrible bosses

They share a passionate embrace and all is forgiven

He rushes upstairs to freshen up for dinner

While she preheats the cold food on the cooker

As she tiptoes upstairs to sneak a peek at his naked body

And announce his dinner is ready

She hears the last bit of a phone conversation

Her heart stops as she hears the words “I love you baby”

He turns to see her staring at him wrapped in a towel

Like a guilty man caught with his pants round his ankles

Silence befalls the household

Do all newlyweds go through this phase?
